Don’t Compromise This Spring – Mzuri in Direct Driller

Featured in January 2020’s edition of Direct Driller, we explain why you shouldn’t compromise this spring.

“A large part of the trial farms turnaround has been put down to widening the cropping rotation and including more cover and spring crops, something that the manufacturer advocates and is easily achievable using the Pro-Til drill.
With the exceptionally poor weather restricting much of drilling during Autumn 2019, the manufacturer suggests getting spring cropping right will be even more important this year.

Designed to deliver quick and consistent establishment direct into residue the Mzuri Pro-Til drill boasts several innovative features that make it ideally suited to spring drilling and getting a crop up and away quickly.”

Matthew Brown

Mzuri user Matthew Brown achieved fantastic results with his Maize crop in the District and County Maize competition in Staffordshire.

Not only has Mr Brown found award winning success with his Mzuri system, but he has achieved time and labour savings, healthier soils and a drill that is easy to use all in one.

In Field Research Pays Dividends

Jane Brooks caught up with the team at Springfield Farms, Mzuri’s trial farm and facility, on the 23rd May, the last of three Spring Strip Tillage Open Days at the Worcestershire based manufacturer held this year.

Being able to improve and develop machinery based on real world findings in similar conditions is the aspiration of many agricultural machinery manufacturers. Combine this with almost a decade of farm based research and development, much of it gained through a programme of crop trials, together with engineering and manufacturing experience and you’re pretty much where strip tillage drill and equipment manufacturers Mzuri are today.

Case Study: Strip-Till Switch Should Cut Costs and Boost Soil Condition

After five years of having the oilseed rape at the 1000ha Penlynn Estate, Llwynhelig, Cowbridge in Wales established by a contractor using the Mzuri strip-till system, the estate has bought its own 4m Pro-Til 4T model and a stubble rake for the coming season.

The crop accounts for about a quarter of the 400ha of arable area, and was previously established using a Biodrill on a TopDown cultivator. “As a break crop it’s becoming increasingly marginal to grow, so strip tillage will help reduce establishment costs while improving soil health and structure,” says assistant manager Damien Burnell.

Integrated approach to crop establishment gets the best out of strip-till drill

With pressures like slugs, black-grass and flea beetle to contend with, everyone knows getting a crop up and away in the autumn is critical, but not everyone knows this can be achieved in one-pass, straight behind the combine.
British manufacturer Mzuri has been championing just that, a strip tillage system that achieves quick, even establishment in a range of soil types – with none of the typical drawbacks of direct drilling.

Mzuri to launch ClubMzuri and announce this year’s winner at Cereals 2019

Mzuri will showcasing their full range of strip tillage establishment equipment at Cereals 2019 on stand 1038, including the highly popular Pro-Til 3T one pass drill and the Rezult stubble rake. The Mzuri system offers users a weatherproof solution for establishing most crops whilst significantly reducing inputs and protecting the soil and the environment.

In addition, the manufacturer will be launching their latest research initiative aimed at improving best farming practices – ClubMzuri. Further reinforcing Mzuri’s service and aftersales care, the project has been set up to help Mzuri users get the most out of their system by recording and sharing establishment data and best practice techniques. From growers who have been strip tilling for years to those just starting out, the project provides a platform for sharing knowledge and experience to further drive down costs and increase yields.

The manufacturer will be presenting the research findings on their stand 1038 on Day 1 at 3:00pm and announcing the winner of the ‘ClubMzuri Strip-Till Farmer of the Year Award’ who will be chosen based upon their outstanding approach to the system and soil health.

Gathered through face to face workshops over the last 12 months, the first year’s findings have generated interesting results for both existing Mzuri users and those thinking about changing systems. The community reported the reduction in their establishment outlay by an impressive £51/ha and 43mins/ha on average as a direct result of moving from a conventional system to strip tillage. This reflected in two thirds of growers now using their spare time to go contract drilling, bringing in additional income.

For those thinking about making the switch to strip tillage, the project offers a wealth of information to draw comparisons between themselves and similar enterprises based on size, location and soil type. Generated from real Mzuri users’ experiences, the project records measurable, real world data to give growers an insight into how they can get the most out of the system.
